May 28, 2007 -- News agencies are citing witnesses in northern Afghanistan as saying police today opened fire to break up a violent protest against a provincial governor, killing at least 13 people and wounding more than 30 others.

Some 1,000 people were demanding the dismissal of Khan Hamdard, the governor of Jowzjan Province. Some protesters threw stones at government offices in the provincial capital, Sheberghan.

The protesters were reportedly supporters of ethnic Uzbek General Abdul Rashid Dostum, who was for years a powerful military commander in northern Afghanistan.
