May 13, 2007 -- Three civilians, including two school pupils, and a policeman were killed when Afghan border guards and Pakistani soldiers exchanged fire today.

Afghan provincial Governor Rahmatullah Rahmat said the fighting erupted in Paktia Province when Pakistani troops fired on Afghan border guards who were building a security post on the disputed frontier. The Durand line became Pakistan's internationally recognized border through the partition of British Colonial India in 1947.

Afghanistan has never officially recognized a 19th century British demarcation known as the Durrand line as its border with Pakistan.

The Durand line became Pakistan's internationally recognized border through the partition of British Colonial India in 1947.

The government in Kabul is opposed to efforts by Pakistan to build a security fence along the frontier to stop cross-border movement by Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants.

Afghan and Pakistan troops clashed in April when Afghan border guards dismantled parts of the newly erected security fence.
