A BRITISH soldier was killed in southern Afghanistan yesterday after a routine patrol interrupted Taleban fighters preparing an ambush. The victim, from the 1st Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment, was airlifted to the main British base at Camp Bastion, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The soldier was returning from a security "reassurance" patrol in the volatile Helmand province at about 9.30am local time. The patrol was engaged by a larger Taleban force using mortars, 107mm rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, heavy machineguns and small arms. Two more soldiers were later wounded in a second, two-hour battle with Taleban forces. |
